dangle earrings tutorial

These spiral dangle earrings can be made of any small to medium beads of your choice. If you’re a beginner, I would recommend that you use 20g wire (0.8mm) for making the spiral to get the best results. Don’t get discouraged if your spiral is not perfectly round, it takes practice to make well round spirals.

What you need:

  • 2 crystal beads, 4 glass beads, 8 bali spacer beads, or any beads of your choice
  • 2 fish hook earring wires
  • 20g (0.8mm) silver wire
  • 2 eyepins (optional)
  • flat or chain nose pliers
  • round nose pliers
  • wire or side cutters
  • safety glasses (optional)

Make both earrings step-by-step together to ensure they are the same length.

Step 1:

You can use a ready made eye pin, or make one yourself. Use at least 9-10cm of wire for making your own eye pin for this project. Click here to view how to make an eye pin.

Step 2:

Now that you have your eye pin, insert the beads onto your eye pin in the following order: Bali spacer bead, glass bead, bali bead, crystal bead, bali bead, glass bead, and bali bead.

Step 3:

Bend the tail end of the wire 80 to 90 degrees using your hands.

Step 4:

Grip the bent wire with your round nose pliers as close to the bead as possible.

Step 5:

Use your free hand to bend the tip of the wire clockwise around the nose of the pliers to form a loop. You might have to reposition your pliers once or twice. Make sure both earrings are the same length.

Step 6:

Use your side cutters to cut off the excess wire that does not form part of the loop. Always protect your eyes by using safety glasses when cutting wire.

Step 7:

Slip the fish hook wire onto the loop of the headpin, and close the loop completely using your round nose pliers.

Step 8:

Click on the link to follow the steps for making a spiral.
Now that you’ve made your spiral you can put both pieces together, the grand finale! Open the bottom loop of the beaded double eye pin and slip the spiral onto the loop. Close the loop completely so that the fish hook wire cannot slip out. Congratulations, you’ve just made beautiful spiral dangle earrings! There are many ways you can use spirals to make beautiful jewelry. I will gradually add more projects featuring spirals, for example a spiral charm bracelet.
